Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles. Its indigenous Arawakan-speaking Taíno inhabitants named the island Xaymaca, meaning either the "Land of Springs," or the "Land of Wood and Water. Then the British West Indies Crown colony of Jamaica. Following a series of rebellions, slavery was formally abolished in 1834. Jamaica attained full independence by leaving the federation in 1962.

Jamaica is known as the birthplace of many popular musical genres including ska, reggae and dub. Jamaican music has also had an effect on the musical development of other countries, such as the practice of toasting, which was brought to New York City and became rapping, one of the four elements of hip hop culture.

Jamaican music is the voice of the people going through battles against the system that keeps us slaves of their necessities. Bob marley and other Jamaican artist have gave the world a way to express their feelings and fight for a positive change with music. Music is no longer used only for entertainment but is the strongest way of communication worldwide. Music is my weapon represents the people and music united in one movement.
